Advertise.com and the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO) have shared some interesting findings from a survey about online ad technology. The two organizations found that there is a lot of untapped opportunity for retargeting in online advertising.

Retargeting is basically when you market your product from a different angle or to a different market altogether. There’s a good explanation of it at answers.com: Marketing efforts to spur demand for a product that is experiencing declining demand by marketing it as though it were a new product.

Almost half (46.3%) of respondents said that remarketing (also known as retargeting) is the online marketing technology they feel is most under-utilized. Other technologies respondents feel are under utilized include:

Consumers in the U.S. prefer email marketing to direct mail, social media and telemarketing, according to a new survey by smartFOCUS.

When asked to rank their preferred ways of receiving marketing messages, the majority of respondents (62%) said email was their preferred channel of communication, followed by direct mail (23%), and social media (13%). The least popular way to be contacted was telemarketing, with 80 percent putting it at the bottom of their lists.

The survey also found that email communications frequently lead to purchases, with three-quarters (75%) of respondents reporting that they had bought products or services as a direct result of receiving an email.

The most common items purchased as a result of direct email marketing were clothing (82%), followed by purchases from restaurants and coffee shops by almost half (49%) of respondents. Other popular items bought include grocery items (40%) and personal electronics (38%).

When it comes to social media, 40 percent of respondents said they receive communication from vendors on the social networking sites they use, such as Facebook and Twitter. Nearly one in five people (17%) have opted in or requested that companies actively contact them via social media sites.

It appears that television advertising is following a different trend than many have expected. Advertising Age is citing data from a recent study (due out soon) from Nielsen indicating that its doing better than ever. Some may find this a bit surprising with the increasing popularity of DVRs and online video.

Interestingly enough, TV advertising seems to be complimenting online marketing efforts, driving traffic to the web. AdAge says nearly a third of search queries for brands studied are driven by offline ads, namely TV.

Today Yahoo announced the addition of three new targeting options for Yahoo Search Marketing ads. They are demographic targeting, ad scheduling, and enhanced ZIP-level geo-targeting.
